By Aaron Humes: Area representative for Caribbean Shores Kareem Musa is pressing Prime Minister Dean Barrow and Attorney General Michael Peyrefitte to request formally records in the case of Lev Aslan Dermen, set to start today in the U.S. District Court for Utah in Salt Lake City.
Musa writes that Belize’s Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty with the United States allows for the provision of documents, records and other articles of evidence before either country’s courts.
He argues that text messages exchanged between co-defendant in the case Jacob Kingston and Saldivar “will reveal illegality, corruption, and wrongdoing” and calls it ‘a gross dereliction of duty’ that the treaty has yet to be invoked.
Musa calls on Belize’s “competent authority”, the Attorney General to indicate whether by close of the business day on January 31 they will invoke the treaty and reserves the rights of the People’s United Party to challenge them in court if this is not done
