“No case of novel coronavirus in Belize,” says Ministry of Health

Posted: Tuesday, January 28, 2020. 3:02 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: The Ministry of Health said today that there are no confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus strain currently making international headlines in Belize.

Our newsroom spoke with Dr. Russel Manzanero, Epidemiologist at the MOH, who said that the ministry received word of a possible case in Caye Caulker and immediately dispatched a team to assess the situation.

“In this case the person is actually fine. He was not symptomatic. There isn’t any cause for alarm, he wasn’t in any areas where he might have been exposed,” Manzanero said.

He added that the ministry is still keeping track of the person’s movements as a precautionary measure. The MoH is holding a meeting with several other authorities today including the Department of Civil Aviation, to assess current structures in place for monitoring and prevention. The ministry is expected to give an update on the status
of these systems and any updates on actions being taken before day’s end.
