Posted: Thursday, January 30, 2020. 7:05 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: The World Health Organization (WHO) today declared the novel coronavirus a global health emergency.

The deadly virus that originated in Wuhan, China in late 2019 continues to spread to other countries.

The death toll in China is now at 170 while there have been over 8,000 confirmed cases around the world with the majority of cases being in Mainland China.

Belize’s Ministry of Health issued a statement today saying that it is following a case of interest in the Corozal District, but to date, this region including Belize has no confirmed cases of (2019-nCoV).

The Caribbean region still remains at low risk and the declaration of the Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) does not mean that there are any changes in terms of travel bans or restrictions.

The Ministry of Health continues ongoing discussions with CARPHA and PAHO regional and country offices to keep everyone abreast of the regional response. The Ministry and its partners are monitoring all epidemiological information and surveillance activities in relation to the 2019-nCoV.
