By BBN Staff: The United Kingdom (UK) and the European Union (EU) have now finalized the withdrawal agreement whereby the UK will exit the EU as of today, January 31.
Thereafter, a one-year transition period will commence.
The Government of Belize notes that during the transition period, Belize’s trade with the United Kingdom, which is the largest market for Belize’s export of sugar and bananas, will continue to be governed by CARIFORUM EU Economic Partnership Agreement.
“Belize welcomes the approach to European Union (EU) international agreements during the EU-UK transition period, which is set out in the notification issued by the European Union in the context of the UK’s withdrawal from the EU,” the statement said.
Belize can confirm that for the purposes of all of its international agreements with the EU, including bilateral and multilateral agreements, Belize will treat the UK as an EU member state for the duration of the transition period.
Following the end of the transition period, the recently concluded CARIFORUM UK Economic Partnership Agreement will be the new trading arrangement between Belize as a CARIFORUM State and the UK.
