Belizean delegation in Costa Rica for beekeeping exchange

By BBN Staff:  As a part of the linkage and collaboration between the Governments of Belize and Costa Rica, a one-week beekeeping exchange visit was held in Costa Rica for a delegation of Belizeans from January 19-24.

The exchange sought to build institutional and governmental linkages, identify innovations in marketing and product diversification, observe the implementation of good production and manufacturing practices and honey traceability system for the development of the local beekeeping industry.

During the exchange, the delegation visited the Beekeepers Association (ASOAPI) Honey-Processing Center, the Women’s Honey-Processing Association (ASOMEJ), a queen-rearing apiary, and a cantaloupe field utilizing bee pollination services.

Present were Marlon Monge, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Livestock; Dra. Ana Cubero, in the Department of Animal Health; CEO and Directors of the Social Enterprise of Corona Dorada.

The visit was successful in strengthening the linkage and collaboration between the government counterparts as well as exposing participants to innovations in honey marketing, product diversification and the implementation of good practices both at the production and manufacturing stages

The Ministry of Agriculture extends its gratitude to the Government and people of Costa Rica, and in particular, Monge and Dr. Cubero, for their hospitality, openness and continuous collaboration in the development of the beekeeping industry in Belize.

Belize’s delegation was led by the Chief Executive Officer in the Ministry of Agriculture  Jose Alpuche, who was accompanied by Silverio Marin and Josaphat Correa from the Belize Marketing and Development Corporation; Mario Howe, Miguel Huertas and Carlos Martinez, Extension Officers from the Ministry of Agriculture; Irene Magana, beekeeper from the San Felipe Melting Pot of Honey Pre-Cooperative; and Rhodel Camal, Student from Centro Escolar Mexico Junior College.
