By BBN Staff: The Government of Belize, through the Ministry of Works, and in partnership with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has embarked on the Climate Vulnerability Reduction Program (BL-L1028).
The main objective is to reduce climate-related vulnerabilities through investment activities in the downtown Belize City area.
Belize City often suffers from flooding because of its low elevation and its proximity to the sea, resulting in damage to buildings and human suffering. Flooding worsens during heavy rainfall events such as tropical storms and hurricanes.
This program will alleviate the effects of flooding and improve the drainage system between the canals, the Haulover Creek, the Caribbean Sea, and feeder drains. As construction draws near, Belize City residents are asked to exercise caution and patience on their commute through these project-affected areas. Residents are also advised to report environmental and social concerns regarding the execution of the project works to the grievance line at 615-3195.
Each report will be handled according to policies concerning ethical responsibilities. De’Mar’s Stone Company Limited will be conducting the construction on Lot 1: Canal Dredging, which includes canal dredging/proper disposal, canal repair and rehabilitation along the East Canal, Collet Canal and West Canal from January 2020 to September 2020. Will also be doing the construction on Lot 2: Canal Lining & Sluice Gate Installation, which includes the lining of Collet Canal (from Kut Avenue to Yarborough Bridge) and the installation of hydraulic sluice gates from January 2020 to January 2021.
Cisco Construction Limited will be handling the construction on Lot 3: Street Drain Restoration (Orange Street), which includes the demolition and construction of new sidewalk and drainage along Orange Street from January 2020 to January 2021.
