Belize City Council signs Memorandum of Understanding with Jamaican University

Posted: Thursday, February 6, 2020. 7:06 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Today Belize City Mayor Bernard Wagner and Councilor with responsibility for Youth and Sports, Micah Goodin, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the University of Technology, Jamaica Faculty of Science and Sports (Utech, Ja).

Councilor Ryan Elijio and Sports Coordinator Michael Novelo were also present for the signing of the memorandum.

Through this agreement, the Belize City Council and the University will cooperate and work in identified areas such as Utech certified accreditation for coaches, student and faculty exchange, athletic scholarships, development and training of community leaders and public education via seminars, conferences and forums.

The council says that being the home of world class athletes like Usain Bolt and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, UTech, Ja. is an ideal institution for this partnership.

The Belize City Council says that the goal of this agreement is to not only improve the way Belize’s athletes perform, but also improve the way their athletic abilities are groomed and nurtured from a young age.

“It is through collaborations like this, we are all exploring new avenues and breaking new grounds so that a legacy can be left behind for our young men and women. We are confident that we will see the benefits of this agreement come to fruition with our children being the greatest benefactors,” a statement from the council said.
