Belize urges for Taiwan’s inclusion in World Health Organization amidst coronavirus crisis

Posted: Thursday, February 6, 2020. 12:00 am CST.

By BBN Staff: In a press release issued late this evening, the Government of Belize is pivoting off its strong 3-decade old relationship with Taiwan in various fields, but particularly in the health sector, to support a more active role for Taiwan in the World Health Organization (WHO). The advocacy from the Government of Belize is largely in recognition of Taiwan’s experience in global infectious diseases and its active participation in managing the outbreak of the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV).

In the release, the Government of Belize acknowledges that it is aware of a small number of cases of the Novel Coronavirus (2019 – nCoV) in Taiwan as confirmed by Taiwan’s Center for Disease Control (CDC) and supports the ongoing efforts of the Taiwanese government in their response to this outbreak.

“The Ministry of Health also notes that Taiwan’s proximity to the origin of the outbreak would warrant, with a sense of urgency, their full involvement in international consultations at the World Health Organization (WHO) level to properly advise and take care of its 23 million population,” the statement from the Belize government said.

Taiwan’s experience in managing these global infectious diseases can certainly benefit the entire region and their voice and participation at WHO must, therefore, be guaranteed.

The Government of Belize applauds key public health measures that Taiwan has taken to manage the novel coronavirus, including electronic monitoring of quarantined cases and the provision of masks and other items to support the prevention efforts.

The Ministry informed that it is also aware of the level three travel advisory that has been implemented for those visiting China, which limits unnecessary travel there. This also is in line with Belize’s current recommendations.

The Government says that it will continue to work with Taiwan to safeguard the interest and welfare for our people and beyond and will continue to advocate for a voice and vote at the WHO, and representation at the upcoming World Health Assembly.

Universal Health Coverage can only be achieved by fostering and sharing collective efforts, especially in light of outbreaks such as this one.
