By BBN Staff: United Democratic Party (UDP) Chairman Alberto August explained today that the decision to keep the media out of the upcoming leadership convention during the voting was made to protect their voting delegates.
August explained that it is common practice that the media is not allowed at polling stations during voting of any kind and that the
upcoming convention presents a unique circumstance in which the Civic Center will be the venue for the convention as well as the voting.
“We have to protect the integrity of the process and of course the identity of our voters. Not everybody wants to let the world know that
they are a UDP delegate. Of course, people are proud to be UDP but we also have to protect them,” August said.
He noted that once the voting is finished, the media will be allowed in to get the results and cover the speeches from the new party leader
and new chairman. The convention, set for Sunday, February 9, will be the first leadership convention in the UDP’s history.
