Belizeans: What kind of society do we want?

By Charles Leslie Jr.: Don’t think you can have any society without self-discipline, individual responsibility, some kind of property that you can call your own, some basis for identity, and some system of moral values.

I think that we can design a better society.

The fact that we are discontented with the imperfections of our society is not a bad thing in itself.

And if we are to have a society in the future which is strong, healthy and stable, it will be based to a very considerable extent on the virtues that we once had.

● Valuing the family unit

● Respect for the Rule of law and Order

● Justice, especially for crimes against the people

● Protection of our women and children

● Empowering our youths

● Service to others

● Peace of mind

● Hope for the future

But…it cannot be based upon a rigid loyalty to structures, especially if those structures become obsolete and dangerous to the sanctity of the fabric of our society.

What I See Happening To Our Society

As my friend, the late Richard Harrison would say: our society should be shaped like an egg; a tiny upper class, a large middle (working, producing) class, and a small lower middle and poor class.

However, it is shaped more like a triangle: a small upper ruling class, a middle class a bit bigger than the upper class, and a large lower and poor class.

Climbing the class ladder was once based on merit more than political loyalty and tribalism now that has been flipped on its head.

This is especially evident in a society that is producing less and less for export, and consuming more and more from import, living on credit on an individual level and a national level, leaving a large bill to be paid by our children and their children, with little to no concern about the catastrophic consequences to Belizeans, most of who, have no clue about the seriousness of the situation…since most are too young and many haven’t even been born yet.

Because of this reality, as people transition from the largely poor and lower class, up into the smaller middle and tiny upper-middle class, these workers become increasingly petty-bourgeois and as middle-class bureaucratic and organizational structures increasingly govern all aspects of our society, our society is increasingly taking on the characteristics of the lower middle and poor class.

The working, producing, innovating, entrepreneurial class is not growing. The tiny upper class continues to get wealthy by using the large lower and poor class as collateral for the mammoth-sized national debt.

Why Frustration Is Growing

Many people today are frustrated because we are surrounded by organizational structures and artifacts.

Only the petty-bourgeoisie are finding security and emotional satisfaction in this organizational structure and only a middle-class person can find them in artifacts, such as elaborate houses, fancy cars, expensive jewelry, “rich” food, and lavish vacations.

But human beings who are growing up (our young people), crave sensation and experience.

They want contact with other people, moment-to-moment, intimate contact.

But, more and more intimacy really isn’t there. Young people touch each other, often in an almost ritual way; they sleep together, eat together, have sex together.

But intimacy is lacking.

There is a great deal more talk than action, this is why Belize is having a hard time going through a second, peaceful revolution.

What We Need To Understand

We the lower middle and poor class hold the key to the future.

Why? Well, we are the class that makes up the bulk of the voting electorate.

We cannot continue to resolutely defend our dangerous and obsolete organizational structures and artifacts.

We cannot continue to cling to materialism at the detriment of our value-system, our society, our environment and the future of our country and our children.

We are seeing dissent dwindling, mainly from our intellectuals, some of our religious, most of our poor, the people who run the foundations, colleges, all the rest.

Our tertiary level education system has become bureaucratized when they should be the foundations of a strong progressive force.

The people who run these education systems are looking more and more like lower-middle-class bureaucrats who pose no threat to the established order because they are prepared to do anything to defend the system.

We Need To Go Back

We need to go back to when we, as a people, were an active, assertive, aggressive, self-reliant people who didn’t need any help from anyone, especially the Government, and achieve success as individuals by competing freely and fairly with each other.

But, we must demand this system of government that creates real checks and balances for those in public office, and a fair playing field for those in the private sector.

If we don’t demand such a system, we will get more and more of the petty-bourgeois who snuggle down in a hierarchical bureaucracy where advancement is assured merely by keeping the body warm and not breaking the rules, a society of more and more white-collar clerks on many levels living for retirement and find their security through status in structures.

To Future Leaders Of Belize

The UDP is having its convention today. Let’s hope the delegates care more about addressing corruption and the future of Belize and Belizeans.

So, to whoever becomes leader of the UDP, to the leader of the PUP, the BPP, BPF any other political party that may come to be, independents; remember this:

Talk comes from ideology but action comes from vision.

What is your vision for Belize?

Belizeans:

● What kind of system do you want?

● What kind of leaders do you want?

● What kind of country do you want to leave your children?

● What kind of children do you want to leave your country?
