By BBN Staff: Amidst the Wuhan coronavirus outbreak around the world, health authorities continue to grapple with the rapid spread of the virus.
There has also been the sharing of misinformation relating to people in Belize that are suspected to have been in China or suspected to have the Wuhan coronavirus.
This morning, Breaking Belize News spoke to Director of Health Services, Dr. Marvin Manzanero who told us that the national surveillance teams have been deployed countrywide in an effort to quickly detect and treat anyone with symptoms of the virus.
“We are following up cases in Stann Creek, Toledo and Cayo. The Cayo case, I was made aware of it last night. There was very erroneous information being circulated. We had to deploy a medical team this morning to the facility that reported it,” Manzanero said.
Manzanero futher clarified that the person in the Cayo case is not ill.
In addition, Manzanero said that – that person was one of the passengers that arrived at the Philip Goldson Airport on Saturday who was stopped by Immigration because they were querring when that person had travelled to China.
Manzanero said that the team is also following up a case in Stann Creek just as a precautionary measure because that person is also not ill.
Manzanero added that unfortunately, there have been lots of rumors surrounding the spread of the Wuhan coronavirus.
“There is no suspicion that we have been able to document… Even the person who we screened yesterday, they were not ill, and they were not from Wuhan, China. They were from another province which is not at the center of the coronavirus crisis in China,” Manzanero said.
Manzanero also said that the unfortunate situation can get rapidly out of hand since some people from Asian descent are being scrutinized heavily including some that were working with health authorities at the airport.
