World Health Organization labels novel coronavirus-Covid-19 with over 42,000 confirmed cases

By BBN Staff: The World Health Organization (WHO) has introduced an official name for the novel coronavirus that originated in Wuhan, China in December, 2019.

The novel coronavirus is now being called Covid-19.

The introduction of the new name comes after the virus has spread to 33 countries with 42,767 confirmed cases according to TrackCoronavirus with 42,310 of those cases in Mainland China.

The death toll has surpassed 1000 and medical professionals are still grappling with the rapid spread of the virus.

Many countries have imposed travel restrictions for travelers coming from China to avoid the spread of the virus.

“We had to find a name that did not refer to a geographical location, an animal, an individual or group of people, and which is also pronounceable and related to the disease,” a representative from WHO said in a statement.

According to a report from BBC, the new name was derived from “corona”, “virus” and “disease”, with 2019 representing the year that it emerged.

Scientists from around the globe are uniting forces to discuss ways to fight this virus.
