By BBN Staff: Breaking Belize News (BBN) has confirmed that the Supreme Court trial of former Deputy Commissioner of Police Miguel Segura is dangerously close to being thrown out because the Crown cannot locate key witnesses.
We’ve been reliably informed that if the witnesses, Yani Ku, the taxi driver whose vehicle Segura had hit, and two other witnesses Sany Can, and Armand Lennon, do not show up or communicate their intention to show up to the trial, the Court will dismiss the case.
Segura is on trial for his involvement in a fatal road traffic accident back in 2014 near Mile 71 on the Geroge Price Highway, which caused the death of 54-year-old Succotz resident Yolanda Valencia. Segura was driving a police-issued vehicle at the time. Following the accident, images surfaces of Segura exiting his vehicle at the crash site, apparently drunk, pulling up his pants while smoking a cigarette.
Valencia’s mother, Yolanda Valencia, however, had filed a civil claim in the Supreme Court and settled with the government of Belize for $78,000 back in 2016. Notably, it took police over a year to file any charges against Segura.
