By Aaron Humes: The case of the Belize Police Association president Eldon Arzu vs Commissioner of Police (COMPOL) Chester Williams was adjourned yesterday before Chief Justice (CJ), Kenneth A. Benjamin.
The case will be heard on May 12th, 2020.
Corporal Arzu is suing Commissioner Williams for the legitimacy of his post as leader of the group of junior law enforcement officers.
Attorney for Arzu, Nazira Myles-Espat explains that a Statutory Instrument (SI) regulating leadership of the Association directly affects her client.
Corporal Eldon Arzu has been the President of the Belize Police Association since 2012.
According to Myles, when the SI was passed, the period should be calculated two years after that, but according to COMPOL Williams, it has retroactive effect.
Myles is optimistic that come May 12, 2020, the matter will kick off in a trial before CJ Benjamin.
In July 2019, Corporal Arzu sought judicial review in the matter which was granted by the then Justice Shona Griffith.
On May 6th, 2019, Justice Griffth ordered that Corporal Arzu report to work in Belmopan where he was transferred since January 2019.
