By BBN Staff: Leader of the People’s United Party (PUP) John Briceño, this evening said that Prime Minister Dean Barrow’s decision to suspend John Saldivar as Minister of National Security “indefinitely” instead of firing him is an insult to the Belizean people.
Briceño says that he has a pre-recorded statement that will be released shortly but that his initial reaction to the decision was to feel insulted.
“He knew all along what was taking place in Utah, he was told, he saw documents that were filed in court, and he refused to take action. And now that all of that has come to the public…for him to say that he is going to suspend Saldivar and in effect still keep him as minister,
I think its an insult,” Briceñosaid.
Briceño noted that Saldivar issued a statement today where he informs the public that he is still the Minister of National Security, which Briceño feels is even more insulting.
The Prime Minister made the announcement today that Saldivar would be suspended and that he also asked Saldivar to resign as Leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP). Barrow said that the suspension would allow Saldivar time to prove his innocence and give the government time to request the official court transcripts which will then be handed over to the police for an investigation.
