By Aaron Humes:Minister of Natural Resources and new first deputy leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP), Hugo Patt seemed to dodge responding to a telling question on Wednesday about reports of caye land being sold to party delegates before Sunday’s National Convention.
He said simply, “I dont know ma’am, I really don’t know.”
On further prompting, the Deputy Prime Minister referred to “a policy where land is issued and a set price and I think that a cabinet decision was taken to that effect and all we are doing is complying. I don’t see the issue of a Belizean getting a piece of and paying the social price that all people pay. What is the issue with that?”
The implication, in line with reports that significant money was spent to buy votes for Patt’s running mate John Saldivar, now deposed, is that these lands were processed in time for the convention.
But Patt sidestepped the questions, arguing that the Ministry is doing its job.
