Opposition leader says he will resign if PUP loses next election

Posted: Thursday, February 13, 2020. 11:00 am CST.

By BBN Staff: Following a press conference this morning, Opposition leader, John Briceño fielded a host of questions from the media, including one on the possibility that the PUP loses the upcoming general election.

Briceño said he would certainly resign from the post of party leader if the PUP is not successful in the upcoming general election sometime later this year. Briceño said while that is his position, he is confident that the people of Belize have had enough of the evident and rampant corruption in government and the lack of effort by GOB in effectively addressing those scandals.

The incumbent United Democratic Party administration has experienced its most unstable period of history in the last few days with testimony from the unfolding Lev Dermen trial, serious allegations of corruption against UDP ministers and mounting scrutiny. Briceño said he is confident that when Belizeans go to the polls, they will give the PUP a new mandate to lead the country and implement measures to stem the tide of corruption.
