By BBN Staff: On Saturday, shortly after midday a man drowned out west.
He has been identified as Roy Grinage, 29.
Grinage, a tractor operator at Santander, had clocked out of work at midday and made his way to the northern bank of the Belize River.
Normally, a boat would be there to ferry employees across the river but none was there when Grinage arrived.
He reportedly dived into the river and tried to swim across but fifteen feet into the river he began to experience some difficulties and later submerged.
His co-worker, David Esquivel, saw him struggling and dove into the water to try and rescue him. However, by the time Grinage was pulled to the river bank he had already succumbed. His coworker tried to resuscitate him but all efforts failed.
Grinage’s body was subsequently transported to the Western Regional Hospital by Roaring Creek police.
While the Grinage family suspects foul play in the death of the former military man, police have since launched a criminal investigation.
