Belizean Coast Guard officer to train at Taiwanese Naval Academy

Posted: Tuesday, February 18, 2020. 9:07 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Belize Coast Guard Officer Cadet, Tyler Reyes, has been accepted into the Republic of China (Taiwan)’s Naval Academy, becoming the first of his peers to be trained in Taiwan.

Today, Reyes was personally congratulated on the achievement by Ambassador of the Republic of China (Taiwan) to Belize, H.E. Remus Chen.

According to the Coast Guard, Reyes will leave this month and will spend a total of four-and-a-half years at the Taiwan Naval Academy in Zuoying District, Kaohsiung, Taiwan. The Coast Guard added that while there, Reyes will “undergo a combination of academic programs and military studies that will prepare him for professional military service in the Belize Coast Guard.”

His departure is a part of a broader defense engagement program between Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defence and Belize’s Ministry of National Security. That cooperation includes training and the acquisition of equipment.
