John Briceno: “Next PUP government will strengthen governance in Belize”

Posted: Wednesday, February 19, 2020. 10:00 am CST.

By BBN Staff: This morning, People’s United Party (PUP) leader, John Briceno made an appearance on Channel 5’s Open Your Eyes morning program and spoke about plans for better governance in Belize and other reforms to fight corruption in government.

Briceno said among the plans of the next PUP government is to strengthen the Accountant General’s office so that it is independent and reports not only to the Prime Minister but also to the National Assembly.

Briceno says that the PUP is presenting to the Belizean people specific proposals to remove the vast amount of powers given to ministers and limit those powers.

He also added that the PUP is fully committed to passing legislation that will be implemented.

The PUP leader pledged to begin with those plans within the first 6 months in government and to ensure that the House of Representatives meets at least once every month.

In addition, he said that it should be announced that the meetings of the House Committees are open to the public and should even be live-streamed.

When asked about campaign financing legislation, Briceno said that his party is committed to enacting more reforms regarding the types of donations given to political parties, setting dates for elections, limiting length of campaigning and disclosure of campaign financing.

He also used the platform to further attack the current UDP administration as “the most corrupt government the country has ever seen and the administration continues to defend wrongdoing within members of Cabinet.”
