By Delroy Cuthkelvin: It is important to note that each of the six (6) demands outlined by the National Trade Union Congress of Belize (NTUCB) at its press conference on Monday, starts off stating, “No elections until…”
The fact that the unions are NOT joining the Opposition in calling for immediate general elections, but are instead calling for those elections to be delayed until campaign finance laws and other reform measures and actions to ensure transparency and bring redress are implemented, is a clear signal that the unions do NOT believe the PUP represents the answer to the problems we face, and that they (the unions) are still holding out hope in the UDP to fix what has admittedly gone wrong.
It is necessary and fitting for us in the UDP to concede that all is NOT well in our party and government; to heed the general call of the social partners (and the public at large) to set things right; to sit down with them so we can hammer out the details; and to be appreciative and proud of the fact that Belizeans continue to expect better from the UDP and hold us to a higher standard than our political opponents in the other major party.
This, in our view, should be the UDP’s response to the union and general public’s demands.
