By BBN Staff: Aspiring Belizean writers still have until February 25 to apply for the Copal Distillery Writer-in-Residence Fellowship to attend the 2020 Belize Writer’s Conference from April 25-30 in Hopkins Village, free of charge.
The fellowship covers lodgings, meals, and the cost of the workshops held at the conference as well as one-on-one consultations with literary agents for the winning writer. Applicants must be Belizean and in the field of either fiction, non-fiction or memoir writing but do not need to have published work.
Joey Garcia, founder and Executive Director of the conference, told our newsroom that the conference is the only professional writing conference in Belize and is geared towards refining the amazing raw talent that already exists in the country.
“We are one of the only countries not included in the international literary canon, the most important or impressive literary works from
around the world. Haiti is there, the Dominican Republic, Virgin Islands, Jamaica are all there. We can get there but the only way that will happen is professional-level development,” Garcia said.
She added that this year’s conference is particularly special because one of the scheduled guests is a literary agent from Hollywood, who specializes in acquiring manuscripts to turn into books with the end
goal of making movies.
Garcia also noted that the afternoon sessions of the conference, which are $30 a session is open to all Belizean writers.
