By BBN Staff: Today, Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) issued an update on the company’s efforts to upgrade its power generation capacity on Caye Caulker, noting that it has installed a new unit that is more powerful than the previous model.
“The newly installed generation unit for Caye Caulker will increase BEL’s generation capacity to 4.1MW. This is 70% more than the island’s peak demand, and is well above international standards for electricity generation supply to small insular communities. Load testing and fine-tuning of the unit started on Wednesday, February 19, one week later than originally scheduled…”
The company added that works are expected to continue through to February 25, during that time, customers may experience intermittent supply fluctuations and outages.
BEL said that once the new generation unit is fully operational, that maintenance works will begin on the other units supplying the island and that those works are scheduled to run until the end of April. The company also noted that it has been keeping the community abreast of all the developments and held a meeting on February 14, to provide updates to the Caye Caulker Village Council.
