Mayor Earl Trapp says farmers detained by police need trade licenses

Posted: Thursday, February 20, 2020. 9:54 am CST.

By BBN Staff: This morning, BBN posted a video showing some local farmers being detained at the San Ignacio market by police.

Some farmers at a private lot beside the market shared their story with us.

The famers say that the Town Council is listening to alleged complaints by market vendors that rent stalls at the market and are now not allowing local farmers to sell retail produce to buyers at the market.

The farmers believe that their rights are being trampled upon and went ahead and rented a private land usually used as a parking space to sell their locally produced vegatables.

“The problem is that we also pay to the market people and they still don’t allow us to sell sometimes, they are moving us around and sometimes it doesn’t pay to sell to market people because they stay owing us up to for a year. This morning they detained some farmers here simply because we were selling our vegetables,” the farmer said.

BBN reached out to Mayor of San Ignacio and Santa Elena, Earl Trapp, who explained the situation.

“Regardless if it is a private land, they cannot sell there because they need to obtain a trade license like anyone else. It can be your house but if it is that you are selling, you need approval from the Town Council,” Trapp said.

The Mayor also said that he informed the farmers beforehand that they cannot sell on the private lot because they do not have a trade license.
