UDP in limbo; meeting underway to discuss possibilities for new leader

Posted: Thursday, February 20, 2020. 10:43 am CST.

By BBN Staff: The United Democratic Party (UDP), the ruling administration and party which has dominated party elections since 2008, is in limbo.

Prime Minister Dean Barrow had said his farewell to the party at the UDP national convention on February 9, 2020.

The majority of UDP delegates at the UDP convention voted for, and elected former Minister of National Security, John Saldivar as the new UDP leader.

Mired in controversy and scandal, Saldivar’s post as UDP leader was short-lived as he resigned as leader-elect and also as Minister of National Security in light of allegations made against him.

Sources have informed BBN that the UDP is hosting a series of meetings in Belmopan to decide the way forward for the party especially since this is a general election year. Saldivar said earlier this week that whenever and whatever his party decides, he will be a part of it.

And after the defeat of Patrick Faber, Faber resigned as Deputy Prime Minister and that post was given to Hugo Patt, who also won the post as UDP deputy leader.

While some would claim that the hierarchy of the UDP supported and fully worked to elect Saldivar as the new UDP leader-elect, it is yet to be seen what Prime Minister and outgoing UDP Leader, Dean Barrow and the UDP’s executive will decide on to choose a new leader, healing the old wounds left in the party and preparing for the 2020 general elections.
