By Aaron Humes: While the Opposition People’s United Party (PUP) was hardly spared from criticism during Thursday’s demonstration-rally, and the government has scoffed at their attempts to take up the corruption mantle, the party’s senior leadership made an appearance which, they say was in support.
Party Leader John Briceño made note that his wife Rossana is a teacher and so was his mother, and he is therefore used to coming out for events like this.
And he took credit for the unions’ demands to Government which mirror those of the P.U.P: “We are not talking about a mythical machete; we’re talking about actual steps we are going to take – how we’re going to strengthen the office of the Auditor-General; the Integrity Commission Office; how we’re going to strengthen the Public Accounts Committee; how we’re going to work with the National Assembly to have monthly meetings, campaign finance regulation…”
Briceño restated his commitment, stating that we cannot continue to manage the country this way, and that if any of his members were to try something when they get into office, they would be on their own; he would not be able to help them.
As for who he will face across the ballot box, Briceño said it doesn’t matter to him, as Belizeans are tired of and fed up with the U.D.P. and will take it out on them at the general election.
The P.U.P’s demonstration kicks off at 11:00 a.m. tomorrow from the corner of Fabers Road and Central American Boulevard.
