John Briceño hints at more lawsuits for Government; doubts senior policeman can investigate ex-boss Saldivar

Posted: Sunday, February 23, 2020. 8:56 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: In a post-rally press call, John Briceño, leader of the People’s United Party (PUP) said he would turn up the heat on Government with more legal battles in court.

“We still have cases that we are going to take out against the Government,” he told reporters without specifying what those might be.

And he reiterated rhetoric from the rostrum concerning the Commissioner of Police and Director of Public Prosecutions’ decision on the Chief Justice’s decision of January 31, which Government has said it will appeal.

Briceño stated that the PUP would continue organizing and putting the Government under increasing pressure until elections are called.

And the Opposition Leader said he would laugh if the news of Commander of Operations, Senior Superintendent, Marco Vidal being tasked to lead the John Saldivar investigation weren’t so serious.

The ex-Special Branch and Eastern Division Commander, Briceño felt, would have his hands tied and not be able to do a thorough investigation of his former boss, despite the respect he has for him. If the Government was serious, he added, it would appoint an independent investigator as asked for by the National Trade Union Congress of Belize (NTUCB).

And concerning his recent war of words with Prime Minister Dean Barrow over the result of the January 31 case, it is not a matter of his personality changing, Briceño said, but a mix of these facts: “…there comes a time when you cannot allow the Prime Minister to just say whatever he wishes – he has been doing that since 2008, that he tries to bully people and he tries to insult them, and we cannot continue to allow that. And also, I am the first person along with Julius Espat to take a Prime Minister to court and we won the case. It goes to point out that I am prepared to fight for what is right, continue to fight for justice and continue to fight for the people of this country.”

And Briceño says Barrow can only control the process for now and that he will have to give up the reins very soon.
