By BBN Staff: The Ministry of Health said today that there is absolutely no truth to an article circulated on social media yesterday purporting that there are six confirmed cases of the coronavirus strain (COVID-19) in Belmopan.
Director of Health Services Dr. Marvin Manzanero, said that he personally read the article and noted that, apart from being untrue with respect to Belize, the data presented on COVID-19 was also inaccurate.
“There is nothing of value that that article has,” Manzanero said. “We have one person right now under the 14-day self-isolation, everybody else has been cleared from that self-isolation coming out of China. But there is no truth to that article from yesterday.”
He also expressed concern that repeated incidents of fake news may cause the population to hesitate to take an actual confirmed case seriously, which could cause problems for Belize’s health system. Manzanero added that the ministry is preparing an update on COVID-19 to share with the public by day’s end because the situation internationally had changed drastically over the past few weeks.
Breaking Belize News (BBN) will be sharing that update as soon as it is issued.
