By Aaron Humes: A shock on the island on Saturday cost Belmopan Bandits their Premier League lead for the time being.
The sub-champions lost 3-2 to San Pedro Pirates after leading much of the way.
Yesterday, rival Verdes took advantage with a 3-1 home win over Belize Defence Force. Wagiya and Placencia Assassins played out a scoreless draw.
Verdes leads the league at its halfway point with 12; Bandits are second above idle Altitude, both with 10 points. San Pedro moves up to fourth with eight points; Wagiya and B.D.F. are now tied with six and Placencia has five but remains bottom.
Verdes remain ahead in the race for Belize’s sole CONCACAF League spot, which goes to the winner of the season on aggregate points. They host Altitude to begin the second round in a Sunday, March 1 tripleheader that also sees Bandits away to Placencia and San Pedro in a rare Sunday afternoon game versus Wagiya; B.D.F. are off.
