Ministry of Health issues update on novel coronavirus (COVID-19)

Posted: Tuesday, February 25, 2020. 7:16 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Today, the Ministry of Health (MOH) issued an update regarding the global situation on the outbreak of the coronavirus strain (COVID-19), as well as the local preparation efforts in the event of a confirmed case.

The MOH noted that the virus has spread to 34 countries outside of mainland China and that global health authorities have seen a  reduction of confirmed cases within China but they expect cases outside of China to rise.

“While the Ministry of Health continues to heighten surveillance at points of entry, the Ministry is aware that new studies are showing that individuals who may not be showing symptoms can be infected and also have an unknown source of infection,” the MOH said.

The ministry is also continuing training for all healthcare workers on how to manage the disease.

“Given the dynamics of the COVID-19, the Ministry of Health is recommending non-essential travel to the following countries: China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, South Korea, Iran, Italy and Japan. Kindly note that this is likely to change as this situation evolves,” the MOH added.

The ministry also said that health regions have been advised to identify and prepare isolation areas within health facilities, noting that not all cases require in-hospital care. Breaking Belize News (BBN) spoke with the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital Authority (KHMHA) earlier today and received a brief tour of the hospital area designated for isolation. We’ll have more on that in a subsequent story.
