Youths leading the development of power-lifting sport in Belize with first national competition

Posted: Tuesday, February 25, 2020. 11:19 am CST.

By BBN Staff: Power-lifting is a well-established sport around the world and even in the region; however, it has not taken a prominent space in Belize’s sporting calendar and the Belize Powerlifting Association (BPA) is aiming to change that with the launch of the first national powerlifting competition.

The competition will be held on Sunday, March 22, at the University of Belize Gymnasium in Belmopan. The event starts at 9 a.m. but competitors are asked to be there for 7 a.m. to weigh in so they can be grouped by their specific weight class.

Khalid Usher, one of the co-founders of the BPA, noted that the association’s executive is comprised of members no older than 25.

“We noticed that nobody wanted to put the effort into building the sport in Belize, so regardless of our age, we decided to take it on,” Usher said.

He noted that the competition will serve the greater purpose of putting together a team to represent Belize in the North American Powerlifting Championships, to be held in the Cayman Islands this July.

“We really want to deal with the people who are interested in doing strength sports. It’s a growing sport around the world and there are a lot of opportunities coming from it,” Usher added.

Interested persons are encouraged to contact the association via their Facebook page to learn more about the weight classes, event criteria and the sport of powerlifting in Belize.
