Coronavirus hits close to home: two cases confirmed in Mexico

Posted: Friday, February 28, 2020. 1:26 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: When BBN first reported on the novel coronavirus strain back in 2019, cases were only confined to Wuhan, China, but today, the virus is a lot closer to Belize, as health authorities in Mexico confirmed two cases.

Mexico’s Deputy Health Minister Hugo Lopez-Gatell Ramirez, said that the two patients are a 35-year-old man from Mexico City who traveled to Italy from February 14 to 22; and a 41-year-old man, who is a resident of Hidalgo, but is currently in a hotel in Sinaloa. Municipal authorities in Mexico City said that they have intensified epidemiological surveillance actions.

The two patients mark the second and third cases of COVID-19 to be reported in Latin America. The Ministry of Health, via the Office of the Director of Health Services Facebook page, has issued a statement which is covered at length in another BBN article.
