By BBN Staff: The Ministry of Health issued a statement saying that it is aware of the first confirmed cases of novel coronavius COVID-19 in Mexico.
Both cases in Mexico were imported and have a history of travel to Italy, which has ongoing cases of COVID-19.
The Ministry says that Mexican officials have confirmed that both individuals are well and seem to have mild cases of the disease.
One patient is isolated in a hospital while the other is in isolation at a hotel.
Mexican health authorities have asked the population to remain calm and avoid spreading rumors which can be detrimental in the containment of the cases.
To date, Belize remains free of any cases of COVID-19; however, the Surveillance Team is closely monitoring the developments in Mexico and the region and is in daily communication with counterparts from both CARICOM and COMISCA.
The Ministry says that it is reviewing strategies with partners as we anticipate an eventual phase out from the preparation phase to an implementation phase in terms of our response.
The public is strongly advised to take preventative measures to reduce the risk of transmission.
The Ministry continues to encourage the washing of hands regularly with soap and running water.
When coughing or sneezing, cover the mouth in the inside of elbows or inside a tissue to be disposed immediately. Avoid close contact with persons who have flu-like symptoms. Avoid sharing personal items and disinfect common surfaces. If you have traveled to areas where COVID-19 is circulating and you are experiencing fever, cough, or difficulty breathing, seek medical attention immediately.
The Ministry of Health advises the public to be guided by facts.
The Ministry of Health will continue to provide timely updates as the response changes to this evolving situation.
