Boxing community in Belize mourns the loss of beloved coach

By BBN Staff: The boxing community in Belize is mourning the loss of a local icon in the sport, Coach Leopold Smart.

A recently-issued statement from the Belize Boxing Federation (BBF) paid homage to the fact that Smart had dedicated decades to the sport of boxing and the betterment of the lives of Belizean youths through the discipline that the sport emphasizes.

“Mr. Smart was a boxing coach for over 30 years. He was successful as a coach and trained gold and silver medalists such as Joseph Eagan, Moses Sulph, Horace Cadle and others. Mr. Smart was dedicated and invested his time and effort in youths through boxing. One of his initiatives was to start the Leopold Smart Gym in Belize City which has provided a positive outlet for young people,” the BBF said.

The Federation also offered condolences to the family and emphasized that Smart’s training will live on through the many boxers and coaches he has trained and mentored over the years.
