Ministry of Health plans national defense against coronavirus

Posted: Tuesday, March 3, 2020. 5:30 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: The Government has approved a budget of $900,000 to prepare for the potential arrival of the coronavirus in Belize.

With more than 90 thousand reported cases from China to Mexico and 3,000 dead, Belize is guarding its doorsteps even though Director of Health Services, Dr. Marvin Manzanero, says health professionals should not hang their heads if a case slips through.

The Ministry is planning meetings with its fellows in emergency management, education and tourism to coordinate a response including planning for detection of cases at points of entry and at health offices.

Dr. Manzanero told us he projects that the U.S. might be the source of Belize’s first Covid 19 case though we have not turned away cruise ships as other countries have.

The budget covers training and planning for detection and care. Protocol for handling coughing and sick patients is in place.

There was also a warning that mass gatherings such as activities for Easter and the National Agricultural and Trade Show would be monitored depending on what happens to avoid potential rapid transmission.

Health Minister, Pablo Marin, warned against listening to rumours, following a recent visit to a restaurant where there was open discrimination shown against Chinese nationals.

In the end, the Ministry urges caution and prudence as Belize hopes to combat the spread of this latest exotic pest.
