Ministry of Health says rumor of 5 cases of Covid-19 in San Ignacio is false alarm; 1 person only is in self isolation

Earlier today, Breaking Belize News reported that one person who recently travelled from China was in self isolation in Cayo as a precautionary measure.

Throughout today and this evening, social media was abuzz with messages circulating of 5 suspected cases of coronavirus in San Ignacio. The rumour allegedly originated from a staff member in the Health Ministry.

Late today, the Ministry of Health issued a statement saying that there are no suspected Coronavirus case being investigated at this time in San Ignacio or in the country.

The Ministry confirmed that a Chinese male is indeed under self quarantine in San Ignacio.

“He is in regular communication with us, cooperating and following all our advice to date without incident. The person is at home and we anticipate his completion of the 14 days shortly,” the Ministry noted. The Ministry also promised to continue to follow up on that case of interest.

The statement pleaded to respect the privacy of persons who are working with the conditions implemented by the Ministry.

The Ministry is reminding the public to listen to the facts and avoid spreading rumors.
