Tensions running high at Port of Belize, stevedore protest continues

Posted: Wednesday, March 4, 2020. 11:48 am CST.

By BBN Staff: Things have escalated between the stevedores, represented by the Christian Workers Union (CWU) and the Port of Belize Limited (PBL), as the company has reportedly brought in equipment and personnel to continue the work at the port while the stevedores protest.

As much as seven police mobiles were deployed to the PBL compound this morning, as the stevedores gathered outside, obstructing free movement through the area.

CWU President, Mose Hyde, explained that they have taken this stance because the port has gone against an agreement to negotiate with the union.

Port CEO, Arturo Vasquez, noted earlier this week that the stevedores are considered as essential services and as such, the legality of their strike is in question.  Reports are that other entities are scheduled to join the stevedores sometime this afternoon.

This is a developing story.
