Belmopan CitCo denies approving gas station near school

Posted: Thursday, March 5, 2020. 8:01 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: The Belmopan City Council said it never offered its approval of a gas station to be built in the East Ring Road area of Belmopan near a catholic high school.

The project has been condemned by the Department of the Environment (DOE) and the local management of the Our Lady of Guadalupe High School as unfit for purpose.
As Mayor Khalid Belisle’s council saw it when it was first approached, it told the businessman involved to seek approval from the DOE, city fire department and neighboring stakeholders. If they approved, then CitCo would not object to those agencies doing further assessment and evaluation of the site’s suitability.

According to the Council, when the Department of the Environment and Fire Department ruled the site unsuitable, it did not follow up and considered the matter settled; however, this was verbal feedback only.

The Council, acting on DOE’s advice, now says it will not consider the proposal.
