Sister unions, chamber meet to develop strategic actions to address issues relating to governance in Belize

Posted: Friday, March 6, 2020. 5:11 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: The Belize Chamber of Commerce (BCCI) says that as a result of the appalling circumstances facing the nation, coupled with the Government’s ‘flagrant disregard’ for the Rule of Law, representatives of the BCCI, the Belize Network of NGOs (BNN), and the National Trade Union Congress of Belize (NTUCB) held the first of a series of joint meetings today to develop strategic actions to address pertinent issues relating to governance and overall socio-economic development of Belize.

The matters of mutual interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Ensuring the true independence of oversight institutions such as the:  Integrity Commission, Office of the Contractor General,  Office of the Auditor General, Public Accounts Committee (PAC), Law Enforcement Agencies, Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP),  Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), and Electoral management bodies.
  2. Urgently utilizing all available means to ensure that campaign finance regulation and political parties’ registration legislation are enacted without further delay.
  3. Strengthening democracy and significantly reducing corruption through the use of e-government and citizen participation.

“Understanding that our country will not reach its full potential until we address these matters of corruption and political reform, which rob our people of their true development, the named social partners are and will continue to be resolute in accomplishing these national goals, because only the people will save the people,” a statement from the chamber expressed.
