Opponents demand verification as incumbent claims victory in Guyana elections

By Aaron Humes: Guyanese President David Granger has claimed victory in Guyana’s general election held last week Monday, but his opponents say not so fast.

Voters voted for 65 seats in the House of Representatives awarded by proportional representation in two parts. Granger’s A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) and its coalition partner Alliance for Change are leading the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) after results from the largest area of votes, region four was announced.

But according to Caribbean News Service, diplomats, and foreign observers have questioned the announcement of results and the Opposition has claimed fraud, citing inconsistent tallies. The PPP is led by Irfaan Ali.

The winners will get to oversee the management of major crude oil discoveries off the coast to help the economy grow.

The country has historically been divided politically by ethnicity – the PPP representing Indian descendants and the Peoples National Congress, the main partner of the APNU, representing African descendants.
