Belize Progressive Party stands with Stevedores

By BBN Staff: The Belize Progressive Party (BPP) is the latest entity to rally its support behind the stevedores at the Port of Belize Limited (PBL) and the Christian Workers Union (CWU), who have been protesting for fair treatment and the completion of a collective bargaining agreement with the PBL.

The BPP noted that the CWU has been trying to conclude the agreement with the PBL since 2006 and have been repeatedly thwarted. The party also noted that the move by sugar producers to bypass the PBL over the
past 7 months has caused hardship for the stevedores and their families and called on the Government of Belize to intervene on behalf of the workers at the port.

“The public ownership of the Port of Belize would bring a merciful end to the receivership of the port which has kept the stevedores from realizing the collective bargaining agreement that would assure their rights and interests,” the BPP said.

The Government of Belize issued a statement regarding the situation between the CWU and PBL, noting that as of March 6, works at the port had resumed as both parties have signed an agreement and have resolved to continue negotiations. The CWU also served a notice of intended strike action within 21 days, if those negotiations do not proceed apace.
