SINCERE LOVE AND VISION – the two most important ingredients that distinguish real statesmen from “career” politicians

By Bernard Bulwer: I recently spoke to a Belizean woman who migrated to the USA several years ago – a person for whom I have enormous admiration and respect. She has no big-time degrees. She has had her share of life’s seemingly devastating challenges.

At the end of our phone conversation, the first in several years, she was perhaps lost for words when I told her the positive impact she had on my life, and that I referred to her example from time to time. It was not just because of her subsequent achievements, and those of her children.

For me, she was an example of a woman who, when faced with choices, wanted and pursued something more, something better, as opposed to remaining stuck in rut and easy prey for exploitation in Belize.

We all (should) love our children. We make sacrifices for them. We constantly think about ways that they can have a better life, better opportunities, things that make them strong and prepare them to withstand the inevitable storms of life.

Belizean political leaders, of all parties and stripes, here are my questions for you:

  1. Do you really care for those people to whom you say nice words, but deep down, you see voters primarily as stepping stones to feed your lusts and selfish ambitions?
  2. Do you really want for those people whose votes you seek, to remain trapped as beggars and dependents … trapped in a rut, so that they are so desperate and impoverished, that you can perpetually manipulate them to feed your selfish lusts and ambitions?
  3. Do you really think you’re “successful” because you win elections after elections, while your constituents remain trapped, year after year, decade after decade, with more than their share of poverty, destitution, and crime?
  4. Have you pursued ways, doing whatever it takes, as much as is humanly possible, to harness the collective gifts and talents of Belizeans of all stripes, to help ensure the welfare, the health and education facilities, and opportunities for Belizeans and for economy, to be strong enough to withstand the predictable storms that small nations are bound to face?

WHICH PARENT wants their children to be at the mercy of tyrants and despots? Which man wants, in the event he drops dead, that his wife and children are then forced into prostitution to survive, or become ripe fodder for exploitation, or easy prey for “vultures and hyenas”?

‘The proof of the pudding is in the eating.”

For me, the one of the most sacred things is called TRUST. By extension, I feel like a scum-bag when I violate people’s trust. The reason why I wrote that book, “Your Doctor Can’t Make You Healthy” was because I vowed to myself, that people who trusted me enough to seek my help DESERVED … at the very least … my desire to shared what I learned … all that I knew … so that they could take better care of themselves.

Mr and Mrs Belizean Politician, and aspiring politicians, believe it or not, there is a thing called Judgement Day. For me, this is not the day after national elections.

People who subscribed to the law of love, and endeavor to “love thy neighbor as thyself” (in contrast to having them as a bunch of desperate, easily manipulated dependents, with very limited options except to vote you in as their “savior”), will one day discover … hopefully before it is too late … that “LOVE THY NEIGHBOR” is a commandment.

In life, and after you leave, their is a Higher Law at work. Ignore this at your peril.
