By BBN Staff: The Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB) says that, thus far, preparations for the upcoming Population and Housing Census are proceeding as scheduled, but the situation could possibly change depending on the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
The SIB’s Deputy Director-General, Diana Castillo-Trejo, told our newsroom today that the institute is constantly monitoring the situation and working on meeting with the Ministry of Health (MOH) to receive further guidance.
“Obviously, it is a fluid situation…but we will advise if there are any changes at all to the schedule. As of now, we are still on schedule, taking the precautions advised by the Ministry of Health,” she added.
With just under two months before the official start of the Census, the SIB has been preparing through the training of its staff. Training sessions were held in the last two weeks of February and more sessions are scheduled to begin on Monday, March 16. Census 2020 is being held
under the theme “Count Me In.”
With the World Health Organization officially designating the COVID-19 outbreak as a global pandemic this week, large-scale public gatherings are being canceled, the world over. The effect will have on Belize remains to be seen.
