On the KHMH isolation ward for Covid-19

By Dr. Bernard Bulwer: The KHMH Union’s on the hospital’s isolation ward is no small matter. THE KHMH UNION’S POSITION IS 100% WISE AND RESPONSIBLE! The Belizean public should understand and rally behind their position.

Belize needs to URGENTLY request INTERNATIONAL EXPERTISE … “ON THE GROUND” …

I repeat “ON THE GROUND,”  from experts who know, from Mexico, the USA … Or better, from Hong Kong, Taiwan, and South Korea (as they’ve have been there, done that (with SARS etc), and doing that successfully (with Covid-19).

Belizean authorities are parroting words like “isolation”, but with Covid-19, a hospital with the workflow and infrastructure designed like KHMH, “ISOLATION”, in the expert sense, not just “near impossible”, it is IMPOSSIBLE (for Covid-19).

I was told that the nearby Bliss School of nursing is in disrepair, so they could consider the nearby Cleopatra White HC as an option. BUT GET THE EXPERTS TO ADVISE GOB-MOH-KHMH … not by phone or video calls. The experts  need to come to Belize and see the Belizean health challenges on the ground!

REMEMBER also that medical staff who look after Covid-19 are themselves, by definition, high risk, and subject to “ISOLATION” FROM OTHER HOSPITAL STAFF. They also DO NOT go home to to kiss their loved ones or play with their kids.

If Italy, a leading European nation now reports about 1,000, deaths from Covid-19 (as of March 12), WHAT MORE CONVINCING do the Belizean authorities need to realize that Belize does not have the luxury of making missteps, and missed steps.

Ignore this at the nation’s peril.
