San Ignacio resident not under quarantine for Covid-19 at any local hospital; Still no confirmed case in Belize

By BBN Staff: Social media has been abuzz with the sharing of information regarding the rapid global spread of coronavirus (covid-19).

This morning, information was shared of an Asian national who was reportedly hospitalized in San Ignacio.

Sources at the Belmopan and San Ignacio hospital tell BBN that no person from San Ignacio is under quarantine at the hospital.

Director of Health Services, Marvin Manzanero also confirmed to BBN that there is currently no case of coronavirus in Belize.

But, Belize is now only 1 of 4 Central American countries that have no confirmed case of coronavirus.

Belize’s Ministry of Health enacted a national surveillance system and continues to monitor and test patients.

The Caribbean Public Health Agency has upgraded the risk of COVID-19 to ‘very high’ for the Caribbean.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has also declared the coronavirus a global pandemic.

The Ministry of Health has now embarked on an awareness and prevention campaign encouraging the public to wash their hands regularly and practice ‘social distancing’.

The public is being advised to avoid big crowds to reduce the spread of germs.

Parents with children who have the flu are advised to keep the children at home.

The public is advised to practice frequent hand-washing and disinfecting surfaces.

Ministry of Health’s Surveillance Officer, Lorna Perez informed that people would have to be exposed to the virus by people coming from other parts of the world that have it.

Prime Minister Dean Barrow and Minister of Health, Pablo Marin will host a press conference on the coronavirus today at 3 pm.
