By BBN Staff: Late this evening, the Government of Belize officially announced that cruise ship calls to Belize are being suspended as a part of efforts to contain the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19).
The Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation said that it received conformation that Norwegian Cruise Lines and Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines are suspending global services for 30 days.
“It is expected that other cruise line companies that also call to Belize will be following this growing trend. The decision of suspension of cruise services was made to prevent the spread of the virus to unaffected populations, countries, and crews,” the Ministry said.
The loss of cruise ship calls is expected to have a major economic impact on Belize, as the tourism high season nears its end. The Fourth Quarter Gross Domestic Product (GDP) figures from the Statistical Institute of Belize noted that the services sector saw little growth at the end of last year and that there were 15 fewer cruise ship calls than in 2018.
