CitCo visits residents to advise on coronavirus emergency

Posted: Monday, March 16, 2020. 3:38 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: It is important, says Mayor of Belize City Bernard Wagner, for residents not to panic at the widespread COVID-19 (novel coronavirus) emergency.

But it is equally important to be prepared and for all to act prudently.

Councilor with responsibility for health, Delthrude Hylton, shared following a press briefing this morning that its Public Health unit is visiting schools and particularly vulnerable areas, educating on cleanliness and finding out those who are most in need.

But Hylton pointed out that most Belizeans can afford the basics for cleanliness: “What we are asking people to start off with is the regular soap and water they have; you don’t need to go buy anything fancy. Use the regular soap to wash; use your soap powder to clean your house, Clorox to clean your house.”

Mayor Wagner says a “panic narrative” would most hurt the Old Capital though he allowed that Belize needed to be in “preventive mode” at the borders to keep out the virus if possible.
