By BBN Staff: Former Minister of National Security and UDP leader elect issued a statement tonight saying that Cayo North area Representative Omar Figueroa will be submitting his name for consideration as Leader of the United Democratic Party.
Saldivar says that at the request of Prime Minister, Dean Barrow and his colleagues, he agreed to step aside as Leader-elect with the understanding that the UDP would look for a consensus Leader that would be acceptable to the two factions that had previously competed for the post.
“My resignation was not an admission of any guilt or wrongdoing and was never intended to give the defeated candidate Hon. Patrick Faber another chance to become Leader. My resignation was to afford the Party the chance to endorse a consensus Leader,” Saldivar stated.
Saldivar then confirmed that he supports the endorsement of Omar Figueroa as the UDP’s new Leader and called on Patrick Faber to do the same.
Saldivar also indicated that if Faber applies for the post, he will then apply.
In addition, he urged the Executive of the UDP to table a motion to endorse Figueroa.
