New bills introduced in part to help COVID-19 fight and recovery

Posted: Thursday, March 19, 2020. 11:36 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: Prime Minister Dean Barrow in presenting the amendments to the Treasury Bills and Supreme Court acts said that they are in part intended to help in the COVID-19 fight and recovery.

The amendment to the Treasury Bills Act proposes to increase the maturity of Treasury notes from ten to twenty years. This will help, Barrow said, in facilitating borrowing to assist in economic relief.

And among to the multiple amendments to the Supreme Court of Judicature Act, the Chief Justice will be granted powers to make practice directions in instances of public interest and national security. This is to cover the handling of trials and proceedings in the Magistrate’s Court and Supreme Court affecting attorneys, judges, and court staff.

It has been agreed that both bills be passed this day.
