Opposition Leader: COVID-19 emergency funds could be available next week

Posted: Thursday, March 19, 2020. 2:16 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Now that the Budget has passed through the House of Representatives, relief and emergency funds of $25 million may be made available as soon as next week, according to co-chair of the National COVID-19 Oversight Committee and Opposition leader, John Briceno.

The plans to spend them are in the hands of appointed economic czars Senator Dr. Carla Barnett and Christopher Coye, who will coordinate the response.

Briceno also said there has been a reorganization of the technical team supporting the Committee, co-chaired by Ministry of Human Development CEO, Judith Alpuche, and Daisy Garcia Mendez for the Opposition.

We’ll have more from Briceno later on how he crafted the response to the Budget delivered today. The Prime Minister will be addressing the press after the NOC meets Friday morning in Belize City.
